In a significant move aimed at facilitating overseas Pakistanis, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has announced a new 120-day tax-free mobile registration policy for Pakistanis living abroad. This initiative is expected to make it easier for expatriates and visitors to bring and use their mobile phones in the country without worrying about hefty import duties and taxes for a temporary period.
According to the PTA, overseas Pakistanis can now register their mobile phones for up to 120 days without paying the usual taxes that apply to imported devices. The policy is designed to accommodate individuals visiting Pakistan for short stays, allowing them to use their personal devices on local networks hassle-free.
Previously, all mobile devices brought into the country had to be registered through the Device Identification Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS), and applicable taxes and duties were charged. Many overseas Pakistanis and visitors expressed concerns over the high tax rates, especially when their stay in the country was limited.
With this new initiative, the PTA aims to support the diaspora community and encourage them to stay connected with their loved ones during their visits. The move has been widely appreciated by Pakistanis abroad, who often struggled with registering their phones under the existing system.
To avail of the 120-day tax-free registration, overseas Pakistanis need to follow the PTA’s official procedure, which is expected to include providing proof of travel and identity. Detailed guidelines are available on the PTA’s official website.
This step not only strengthens Pakistan’s relationship with its overseas citizens but also reflects PTA’s commitment to making technology and communication more accessible and affordable for everyone.
